An abortion is the removal of an embryo or fetus from the female uterus, resulting in its death. This is done by medical or surgical means for a range of reasons, including personal choice.
The issue of abortion is controversial and involves religion, feminism, health, morality and politics. It asks philosophical questions, such as what is life? do I have choice and free will? what is a moral decision?
The following essay by the philosopher, Kelley Ross shows that both sides of the abortion argument fail to stand up to reason i.e. they are based on emotional opinion. This is because our current world view has no foundation for truth, that is, no understanding of physical reality. What this website aims to do is show that there is a simple scientific explanation of what exists, based upon the Wave Structure of Matter in Space.
So we can now explain how we have a physical human body, rather than just our ideas (that we have a body). See our webpage on the Philosophy of Mind. The WSM explains life in terms of matter, though there is still much to understand about the complexity of our minds and human emotions. By understanding how a physical body exists, we can deduce correct moral behaviour, in that morality is both a human construction and the guidance of our actions from the necessary interconnection of the universe.
WSM also explains how we can have limited free will. It describes a finite and necessarily connected universe within an infinite space (which therefore cannot be predetermined). This explains how we can live as moral creatures with the capacity for human choice. 'Limited free will' is limited by the necessary connection of matter (we cannot defy gravity and fly).
Therefore this website, in regard to abortion promotes the view of pro-choice. Humans are thinking, creative, moral beings necessarily connected to all other matter in the universe. Our free will is limited, but allows us to make moral decisions (based upon the truth of physical reality) to create better futures for ourselves and humanity, free from cultural myth and religious dogma.

From the essay: 'Abortion is an issue that evokes, on all sides, very strong feelings and judgments and very heated recriminations. The most radical formulation of the anti-abortion or 'pro-life' side of the debate views abortion as the murder of unborn children. ..On the other hand, the most radical formulation of the pro-abortion or 'pro-choice' side views opposition to abortion as against the freedom of women, as hatred of women, and as part of a historical effort to subjugate women as nothing more than baby-making machines or, failing that, to see that they die in botched abortions.
My concern in this essay is to examine the extent to which arguments used by both sides of this debate are poor to untenable. The common acceptance of bad reasoning as self-evidently true always serves to demonize the opposition and to further radicalize and irrationalize the whole debate, to the benefit of every kind of extremist.'

Every year, thousands of baby girls in India are murdered by their own parents. Sociologists blame such killings on a widely held Indian belief that girls are an economic drain because families still have to pay expensive dowries at the time of their marriage.

any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of
sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which
life owes its perpetuation. ... The primitive stages can always be re-established;
the primitive mind is, in the fullest meaning of the word, imperishable.
... Mans most disagreeable habits and idiosyncrasies, his deceit, his cowardice,
his lack of reverence, are engendered by his incomplete adjustment to a
complicated civilisation. It is the result of the conflict between our instincts
and our culture. (Sigmund Freud)
