Sincerely,From the essay: 'Sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests is and has been a problem known to every bishop in America. Many or most of these bishops and their chancery officials have been, unwittingly or not, accomplices of child abusers. The priesthood had to be protected because it was a divine institution. To think that a person who had been 'called' by God to a life of celibacy was guilty of a sexual 'crime' was not a part of the thought processes of hierarchy. As unacceptable as they may view pedophilia to be, it was not a matter for civil prosecution. .. In general, clerical sexual abuse was regarded as spiritual weakness, rather than crime or psychopathology.
... Celibacy is not the cause of pedophilia. But celibacy as idealized, institutionalized and mandated by the church provides an ideal environment for those men whose sexuality (and personality) development has been arrested at an immature level leading to their inability to establish intimate relations with another adult.'

Nearly everyone in the US has sex before marriage, a new survey shows.
Dr. Lawrence Finer, (The Guttmacher Institute in New York City) was prompted to do the study by increasingly widespread public and private efforts to promote abstinence until marriage. 'Our motivation,' he said, 'was to say - is this a goal that can realistically be achieved; does this approach make sense?'
'Evidence from the past 50 years suggests that establishing abstinence until marriage as normative behavior is a challenging goal,' Finer concludes in his report, 'These findings argue for education and interventions that provide young people with the skills and information they need to protect themselves from unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases once they become sexually active.'

any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of
sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which
life owes its perpetuation. ... The primitive stages can always be re-established;
the primitive mind is, in the fullest meaning of the word, imperishable.
... Mans most disagreeable habits and idiosyncrasies, his deceit, his cowardice,
his lack of reverence, are engendered by his incomplete adjustment to a
complicated civilisation. It is the result of the conflict between our instincts
and our culture. (Sigmund Freud)
