Pedophilia & Child Sexual Abuse / Molestation: Understanding the Differences
From the website: 'Pedophilia usually refers to an adult psychological disorder characterized by a preference for prepubescent children as sexual partners; this preference may or may not be acted upon. The term hebephilia is sometimes used to describe adult sexual attractions to adolescents or children who have reached puberty.
Whereas pedophilia and hebephilia refer to psychological propensities, child molestation and child sexual abuse are used to describe actual sexual contact between an adult and someone who has not reached the legal age of consent. In this context, the latter individual is referred to as a child, even though he or she may be a teenager.
Child molestation and child sexual abuse refer to actions, and don't
imply a particular psychological makeup or motive on the part of the
perpetrator. Not all incidents of child sexual abuse are perpetrated
by pedophiles or hebephiles; in some cases, the perpetrator has other
motives for his or her actions and does not manifest an ongoing pattern
of sexual attraction to children. Thus, not all child sexual abuse is
perpetrated by pedophiles (or hebephiles) and not all pedophiles and
hebephiles actually commit abuse.'
From the essay: 'Our current sexual abuse system promotes an antisexual
view of human sexuality. This is seen in the depiction of sex as bad
in sexual
abuse
prevention programs, the readiness to define a sexual or affectionate
interaction as abusive, the criminalization of childhood sexual behavior,
and the genitalization of human sexuality. The consequences of this are
likely to be negative for children, adults, and the society.
... The view that there has been a movement towards antisexuality and
overreaction to childhood sexuality is supported by a poll of mental
health and legal
professionals reported by Haugaard and Reppucci (Okami, 1992). The poll
indicated that 20% of these professionals believed that frequent hugging
of a 10 year old child by parents required intervention, that between
44% and 67% believed intervention was required if parents kissed the
child briefly on the lips (as when leaving for work), and that 75% believed
intervention was required for parents who appeared nude in front of their
5 year old child.
Antisexuality is also evident in the need to deny and ignore the
sexuality of children. The oft-repeated but unfounded dogmas that children
cannot
talk about anything they have not experienced and that age-inappropriate
sexual behavior means the child must have been sexually abused are counter
to the research concerning children's sexuality.'
The Rind, Tromovitch & Bauserman Report: Examining Trauma / Harm
in Child Sexual Abuse
Published in June 1998, this academic report created huge controversy
as it questions the assumption that victims of sexual abuse are significantly
traumatized.
From the essay: 'Many lay persons and professionals believe that child
sexual abuse (CSA) causes intense harm, regardless of gender, pervasively
in the general population. The authors examined this belief by reviewing
59 studies based on college samples. Meta-analyses revealed that students
with Child Sexual Abuse were, on average, slightly less well adjusted
than controls. However, this poorer adjustment could not be attributed
to CSA because family environment (FE) was consistently confounded with
CSA, FE explained considerably more adjustment variance than CSA, and
CSA-adjustment relations generally became nonsignificant when studies
controlled for FE.
Self-reported reactions to and effects from CSA indicated
that negative effects were neither pervasive nor typically intense,
and that men reacted much less negatively than women. The college data
were
completely consistent with data from national samples. Basic beliefs
about Child Sexual Abuse in the general population were not supported.'

Rind, Tromovitch, and Bauserman: Politically Incorrect - Scientifically
Correct
From the essay: 'The response to the Rind, Tromovitch, and Bauserman
(1998) study was surprising. But the response of the American Psychological
Association
(APA) was, to say the least, startling and distressing. Rather than responding
to the outcry provoked by this study with a discussion of the right of
and importance for scientists to publish unpopular findings, the APA
chose to distance itself from the study. This distancing included the
assertion that child sexual abuse (CSA) causes serious harm and that "such
activity should never be considered harmless ..." (American Psychological
Association, 1999). Additionally, the statement
ignored the recommendation of Rind et al. to differentiate abusive sexual
behavior from the non-abusive.
This paper addresses these two issues. First, it asserts that the idea
that adult/nonadult sexual behavior "should never be considered
harmless" is not based on the evidence. Second, it supports the
importance of differentiating abusive and nonabusive adult/nonadult sexual
behavior both in the research and practice arenas. Additionally, this
paper explains why a professional organization, such as the APA, would
distance itself from the Rind, Tromovitch, and Bauserman's report. Lastly,
it makes recommendations with respect to responding to the problem of
adult/nonadult sexual behavior.'

The Vienna psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing categorized child molesters
into three types:
* a.) pedophile (main sexual interest is children)
* b.) surrogate (that is, the child is regarded as a surrogate object for a
preferred, non-available adult object)
* c.) sadistic.
Other researchers used their own terms for the Krafft-Ebing categories:
* a.) preferential/structured/fixed (i. e. pedophile) type,
* b.) situational/opportunistic/regressed/incest (i. e. surrogate) type
* c.) sadistic (no change)
Use of the term pedophile to describe all child sexual offenders is
seen as problematic by some people, especially when viewed from a medical
standpoint, as the majority of sex crimes against children are perpetrated
by situational offenders rather than people sexually preferring prepubertal
children.

caused by sexual abuse in childhood was explored by examining retrospective
self-reports of 344 males. Included in the study were 77 heterosexual
pedophiles, 54 homosexual pedophiles, 51 nonpedophilic sex offenders
against children, 36 sex offenders against physically mature females,
75 heterosexual paid volunteers who erotically preferred mature females,
and 51 homosexual clients who preferred mature males.
Each sex offender
took a phallometric
test of erotic gender and age preferences. The analysis of self-reports
confirmed that the proportion of pedophiles who report having been
sexually abused in childhood is larger than that of men who
were not charged for or accused of a sex offense against a child though
the difference is relatively small. Further analysis demonstrated,
that pedophiles who admitted having an erotic interest in children
more often claimed that they had been sexually abused as children than
pedophiles who did not admit having such feelings. This interdependence
renders the reliability of these self-reports questionable.'

Social networking giant MySpace are facing four separate lawsuits in the
US which allege that site users were victims of sexual abuse.
'Feb. 2007. MySpace have announced victory in a 30 million Texas lawsuit
in which it was accused of failing to protect its underage members from
sexual abuse.'
From the website: 'In May 2006, Kevin Poulsen began an automated search
of MySpace's membership rolls for 385,932
registered
sex offenders.
He confirmed 744 sex offenders with
MySpace profiles, after an examination of about a third of the data. Of
those, 497 are registered for sex crimes against children. At least 243
of the 497 have convictions in 2000 or later.'

A Safe Internet: Education & Protection of Children
From the website: 'The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children found that one in five children age 10-17 who regularly use the Internet have received a sexual solicitation while online. One in four were unwillingly exposed to images of naked people or people having sex.
The National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families believes it is important for people to be educated on Internet safety issues and ways to deal with inappropriate content and contact. Education and parental involvement is vital, but use of technology to monitor, block or filter content is extremely helpful.'
The Children's Protection Society (CPS) opened its doors in 1896, a
turbulent time in Australia's history which was reflected in high levels
of addiction, homelessness and social alienation. CPS is an independent
child welfare organisation with a mission to break the cycle of abuse
and neglect in families and improve the life chances and choices for
children who have experienced abuse and neglect.
CPS provides child and family services and has a specialist therapeutic
counselling program for children who have been sexually abused, children
with sexualised behaviours and children with sexually abusive behaviours.
Child Pornography & Link to Abuse of Children Unclear
If someone downloads child pornography onto their computer, is that
an indication they're a pedophile, or might become one in the future?
That question is gaining the attention of forensic psychiatrists as never
before, thanks to recent legislation making possession of Internet child
pornography a federal crime.
According to Dr. Charles L. Scott, associate professor of clinical psychiatry,
two federally commissioned studies, one in 1970 and 1980, failed to find a
strong correlation between viewing erotica and acting out sexually.

has been a problem known to every bishop in America. Many or most of
these bishops and their chancery officials have been, unwittingly or
not, accomplices of child abusers.
... Celibacy is not the cause of pedophilia. But celibacy as idealized,

arrested at an immature level leading to their inability to establish
