Sincerely,
From
the website: "The Dykes on Bikes mission is to support, encourage and
motivate women motorcyclists everywhere. General Membership is open to any
woman who registers for the Pride Ride or who attends the Committe Meetings.
We support philanthropic endeavors in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender
and women's communities and beyond, and reach out to empower a community
of diverse women through rides, charity events, Pride events and education.
In 1976 a small group of 20 - 25 women motorcyclists gathered at the head of the San Francisco Pride Parade and, unbeknownst to them, a tradition began. One of these women coined the phrase 'Dykes on Bikes'. For the next several years, riders just showed up and rode - no formal organization or registration. It was this way for several years until the middle to late 1980s; however as SF Pride became more structured and our numbers kept growing, the need to organize Dykes on Bikes became necessary; thus, the Women’s Motorcycle Contingent (WMC) was born. However, in the press and LGBT culture, we continued to be know as Dykes on Bikes.
After a three year court battle, we are thrilled ‘Dykes on Bikes™’ will be protected under trademark and recognized as a celebration of our identity."

From the website: "Dyke is a slang term for lesbian. Originally it was a derogatory label for a masculine or butch woman, and this usage still exists. However, it has also been reappropriated as a positive term implying assertiveness and toughness, or simply as a neutral synonym for lesbian.
The origin of the term is obscure. The first printed references come from
1920s novels connected with the Harlem Renaissance and suggest that the
term was originally 'bulldyker', with dyke being a shortened form.
There are several theories of the origin of 'bulldyker'. One is that it
arose as an abbreviation of 'morphadike', a dialect variant of 'hermaphrodite',
a common term for homosexuals in the early twentieth century. This in turn
may be related the late nineteenth century use of 'dyke' as slang for the
vulva. 'Bull' is also a common expression for 'masculine' or 'aggressive',
so bulldyke may have implied 'masculine woman'.
* Bulldyke – butch
* Diesel dyke – butch who most likely drives a truck
* Baby dyke – a young, immature or recently out lesbian. Sometimes
used within the LGBT community to refer to a lesbian who attempts to appear
butch unsuccessfully.
* Femme dyke – a lesbian who presents in a traditionally feminine
way.
* Lipstick Dyke variation on the pop-culture term 'lipstick lesbian'. Also
known as a 'doily dyke.'
* Stealth Dyke - lesbian who can pass for straight, or does not fit the
dyke stereotype.
* Trans dyke - Transsexual or Transgender woman who romantically and/or
sexually prefers females."

any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of
sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which
life owes its perpetuation. ... The primitive stages can always be re-established;
the primitive mind is, in the fullest meaning of the word, imperishable.
... Mans most disagreeable habits and idiosyncrasies, his deceit, his cowardice,
his lack of reverence, are engendered by his incomplete adjustment to a
complicated civilisation. It is the result of the conflict between our instincts
and our culture. (Sigmund Freud)
