Sincerely,It is very interesting to consider the evolutionary functions of hair on our bodies.
Humans grow hair on their heads, armpits and arms, around the genitals, legs, faces, backs ... In fact as we are all so different, people grow hair on all parts of the body.
What is the evolutionary functions of hair? Arm pit and pubic hair release pheromones, our natural scent which is sexually attractive to others. In our modern western society, these natural odours are generally seen as dirty and should be covered up (by using deodorants, perfumes, shaving). How has our cultural knowledge affected our chances of successful reproduction?
The first clothing of our ancestors is thought to be animal skins. From an evolutionary perspective, wearing animal skins may have improved our hunting success. Our natural smell would be masked by the smell of the animal skin, which would also offer camouflage. As humans began to wear different clothes / skins for protection, this might of led to less hair being grown on our bodies.
Why do men become grey and bald predominately earlier than woman? Perhaps it is to show age, dominance, respect for elders (like the 'silver backs' of chimpanzees).
