'There are no scientific studies that show
that exposure to nonviolent sexual material causes a person to commit a
sexual crime or become more sexually aggressive.'
(Dr. Judith Becker, associate professor of clinical psychology
at Columbia University. http://www.cybercollege.com/sexrsh.htm)
The question of whether a connection exists between the availability of pornography and the prevalence of sex crime is an emotive one, canvassing as it does the issue of freedom of speech. As a result there has been, perhaps, a tendency to shoot the messenger, ignore the research or express concern while at the same time opposing censorship and not being particularly helpful in suggesting alternative remedies.
'Pornography has been so thickly glossed over with the patina of chic these days in the name of verbal freedom and sophistication that important distinctions between freedom of political expression (a democratic necessity), honest sex education for children (a societal good) and ugly smut (the deliberate devolution of the role of women through obscene, distorted depictions) have been hopelessly confused.' (Brownmiller, 1975)

What is the relationship between viewing pornography and committing sex crimes? How does pornography affect the mind, body, relationships, the perception of women in society? An interesting academic essay which explores these ideas.

From the essay: 'The notions of 'sexual addiction' generally, including
'pornography addiction' as well as the recent concern with 'online cyber
sex addiction' are highly questionable to most scientists.
So-called sex addiction may be nothing more than learned behavior that can
be unlearned; labels such as 'sex addict' may tell us more about society’s
prejudices than the client; scientists who have undertaken studies of exposure
to sex materials report that despite high levels of exposure to pornography,
few negative effects are observed.'

By studying men watching pornographic videos, researchers in Canada have pinpointed areas of the brain that become active when the men tried to avoid being stimulated. In evolutionary terms, these regions of restraint (the prefrontal cortex) are newer than the more primitive areas where the sexual urges arise in the first place (the limbic system).

From the essay: 'Sex is an incredibly immersive experience that affects all the senses deeply. Games that hope to fully simulate this experience must affect as many senses as they possibly can to recreate a sexy aesthetic. Devices such as the Sinulator™, Interactive Fleshlight, and SeXBox allow players to feel sexual stimuli while playing a game. Visually, computers and consoles are easily capable of recreating the sights and sounds of sex, too.'

From the essay: 'This study gathered information on street kids’
perceptions of sexual behaviour and coercion. They conducted interviews
with 121 street children from Bangalore. The boys in the study commonly
referred to sex as 'work'.
74 (61%) out of 121 boys were sexually active. Boy to boy anal sex was the
most commonly reported sexual behaviour, followed by vaginal sex.'

Some new research concludes that Google Internet search requests via cell phone are mostly to find porn, and at a rate twice what Google encounters from its regular wired Internet users. Nearly one in five of Google wireless searches are for words associated with adult entertainment. Indeed, the Google study found porn inquiries outnumbered the combined tally of the next four most popular Google mobile search topics.

PornoTube (the pornographic version of YouTube)
is a free adult website where you can upload your own xxx video clips to
share and view pornographic movies (for free, pay per minute, weekly rental
or buy).
PornoTube is one of the most popular adult sites on the Internet. It is
interesting to consider if this is a more moral form of pornography - in
that the participants are willing, informed, in control and presumably getting
off on exhibiting themselves.

From the essay: 'Young men and women are being taught what sex is, how it looks, what its etiquette and expectations are, by pornographic training - and this is having a huge effect on how they interact. Far from having to fend off porn-crazed young men, young women are worrying that they can hold their attention.'

Business was booming for the online adult industry in 1996 when President
Bill Clinton signed a bill threatening the future of the cybercenterfold
phenomena. Called the Communications Decency Act (CDA), the law made it
a felony offense to use the Internet for display or transmission of indecent
material that could be seen by a minor. It was Congress' first attempt to
regulate online pornographers, and the outcome foreshadowed a second attempt
two years later.
Clinton had barely affixed his signature before the American Civil Liberties
Union and American Library Association sued to block the CDA. A three-judge
federal panel in Philadelphia said the law undermined free speech rights
and ruled it unconstitutional. Undaunted, Congress tried again.

From the website: 'The United States Supreme Court has recently ruled (2002) that virtual child pornography is protected free speech, partly on the grounds that virtual pornography does not harm actual children. This is not to say child pornography is completely harmless. Actual or virtual, it eroticizes inequality; in a sexist society it therefore contributes to the subordination of women.'

From the essay: 'Child pornography is an exception to First Amendment freedoms because it exploits and abuses our nation's youth. The latest trend in that industry is 'virtual child' pornography which does not use real children or images of real identifiable children. When the object of desire is not a child, but merely a combination of millions of computer pixels crafted by a skilled artist, can the government ban this allegedly victimless creation?'

any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of
sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which
life owes its perpetuation. ... The primitive stages can always be re-established;
the primitive mind is, in the fullest meaning of the word, imperishable.
... Mans most disagreeable habits and idiosyncrasies, his deceit, his cowardice,
his lack of reverence, are engendered by his incomplete adjustment to a
complicated civilisation. It is the result of the conflict between our instincts
and our culture. (Sigmund Freud)
