Masters
and Johnson were a husband and wife team of Sexology pioneers. Their research
was revolutionary in understanding the nature of human sexual response.
For example, their laboratory work showed some women were multi-orgasmic,
the physiology of female orgasm was the same whether stimulation was clitoral
or vaginal and the true mechanisms of vaginal lubrication.
From the website: 'In 1957, William Masters (1915 - 2001) began to study male and female masturbation and coitus in human beings. He needed a female assistant to conduct interviews. That assistant turned out to be Virginia Johnson (1925 - ), a divorcee who satisfied Masters's requirements: "I was looking for a mature woman who had a keen interest in people and who knew where babies came from."
Virginia and William married in 1972 (the year Masters divorced his first wife). They divorced three decades later.
Their research program, considered a shocking innovation, included the physiological study of women as they reached for and attained orgasm in a laboratory. The laboratory contained a bed, monitoring equipment like electrocardiograph machines, cameras, and an artificial coition machine. The machine featured a transparent, hollow, penis-shaped probe run by a motor, lighted and fitted with a movie camera; its length, depth, and frequency of thrust were adjustable by the human subject. The camera recorded changes in the vagina and was useful in studying the effects of contraceptives.'

'In our culture, the human female’s orgasmic attainment never has achieved the undeniable status afforded the male’s ejaculation. While male orgasm (ejaculation) has the reproductive role in support of its perpetual acceptance, a comparable regard for female orgasm is still in limbo.' 'Another widely accepted 'phallic fallacy' is the concept that the larger the penis the more effective the male as a partner in coital connection. .. It has been presumed that full erection of the larger penis provides a significantly greater penile size increase than does erection of the smaller penis. This premise has been refuted.'
