A supermodel is a highly paid elite fashion model who usually has a worldwide reputation and often a background in haute couture and commercial modeling. There is no set standard for what makes a 'supermodel'. What standards there are change over time. The term itself was somewhat a media creation. The super models usually work for top fashion designers and labels. They have multi-million dollar contracts, endorsements and campaigns.

Fonssagrives is considered by most in the industry to be the first super
model. She was in most of the major fashion and general interest magazines
in the 1930's through the 1950's.
