directed by Steven Shainberg, 2002, is one of my favourite movies. It stars
Maggie Gyllenhaal as Lee Holloway and James Spader as E. Edward Grey.
Sexuality is a subject which is actually explored very little in film, and very few do it well. I find this very strange considering we are sexual creatures and most people are interested in sex. It is culturally accepted that a bit of kissing and rolling around is a safe depiction of sexual intercourse, while cutting someone's head off and other gruesome violent acts are ok. What is wrong with everyone? Most sex scenes in movies leave me cold.
The movie Secretary explores the unconventional sexual relationship between Lee (Gyllenhaal) and Mr Grey (Spader). They develop an erotic, sadomasochistic connection, both getting off on how the other responds. Mr Grey continually harasses Lee about her spelling, coffee making and other daily tasks. She enjoys the psychological discipline, being spanked, tied up and blossoms under his attentions.
