Introduction

Hi there. Thanks for visiting our evolutionary philosophy of human sexuality pages.

The safest way to have sex (lowering the risk of getting pregnant or catching a sexually transmitted disease) is by using contraception. Condoms are good to use as they protect against both.

I will be adding more content in the future.

Have a look at our question and answer section for a discussion on when is the safest time to have sex.

Cheers,
Karene

STD Education: A Medical, Cultural & Political Problem

Dangerous infections continue to spread through human sexual contact. This is especially disturbing since, with appropriate precautions, such infections can easily be avoided. At least one of them can be prevented by vaccination (Hepatitis B) and the others by safe sexual behaviour, such as the correct use of condoms.

Question and Answer about Safe Sex

I was asked this question recently about Safe Sex. I thought others might find the discussion and replies useful (from myself and my Facebook friends).

Cheers,
Karene

Hi Karene,
Could you please tell me the safe time to have sex with my husband. My monthly periods are normal and permanent date for menstruation is 11. So when is the safest time? Waiting for your kind reply. Thanks and take care.
Sonia

Hi Sonia,
The safest times to have sex without getting pregnant are during your period, or the first and last week. It is difficult to know for sure when you are ovulating. So it is best to use contraception if you do not want to get pregnant (even in these 'safe times').

The most fertile period (the time with the highest likelihood of pregnancy resulting from sexual intercourse) is 5 days before until 1–2 days after ovulation. In an average 28 day cycle, this corresponds to the second and the beginning of the third week.

I hope this helps you,
Karene

I strongly disagree with you Karene.
Women are badly afflicted if they have sex during period. Biologically, period glands are in the process of producing ovum. Therefore the genital organ of a woman becomes very sensitive during this period. Intrinsically women should try to avoid having sexual intercourse during their period. I do not advise you to have it, Sonia.
Sincerely, MK.

I totally agree with MK's point of view. He is very cautious about biological outcome instead Karene Jade is quite particular about sexual sensation which is only part of sexual life but not consummate sexual life.
D.W.

On the contrary Daniel, Jade is answering when is "The safest time to have sex without getting pregnant" and that is around menstruation time, although the best thing is to use contraception. On the other hand, for sexual sensation menstruation is not the best time, but this depends on how the body of the woman is experiencing menstruation on that specific month.
C.Z.

Thank you CZ. I am concerned with the truth about biology and sexual pleasure. Sonia, it is safe to have sex whilst you have your period (and in my experience, pleasurable too!)
Karene

Karene and CZ opine 'The safest time to have sex without getting pregnant" around menstruation time cannot be totally credulous. simply because menstruation time is 'arbitrary'. I heard from a friend that he tried to practice as Karene and CZ aforesaid but ended up with pregnancy.
D.W

I am sorry DW but this is not a place for opinions or experiences that your friend had. This is a place of truth. If you have sex during menstruation, you are less likely to conceive than at other times (for example, during ovulation). You can look at the links posted above and study the female menstruation cycle. This is not my opinion, but biological fact. However, there is no real 'safe' time that we can be 100% certain of (which may explain your friends experience). That's why you should use contraception if you don't want to conceive.
Karene

I beg your pardon and hopefully your are not 'upset' over my opinions. No doubt I learn female menstruation cycle during my teenager time. Admittedly use of contraception is safest method to impede conceivability.
D.W.
