Sexology
Biology (Reproduction, Anatomy, Intercourse, Orgasm), Psychology (Libido, Desire, Self Esteem, Fantasies, Addiction), Sociology (Culture, Customs) & the History of Sex

If sexual ethics is to be engaged in a search for truth rather than just accepting what previous generations have handed down, then it must take into account not just modern understandings of science but also knowledge of human bodies, psychology and the emotional and affective side of human being. (Peter Vardy, The Puzzle of Sex, 1997)

Definition of Sexology

Sexology is the systematic study of human sexuality. It encompasses all aspects of sexuality (except involuntary celibacy), including attempting to characterise 'normal sexuality' and its variants, including paraphilias.
Sexology is considered descriptive, not prescriptive: it attempts to document reality, not to prescribe what behavior is suitable, ethical, or moral.

William Masters & Virginia Johnson: Sexologists

William Masters and Virginia Johnson. Picture from WikipediaMasters and Johnson were sexology pioneers (and a husband / wife team). Their research was revolutionary in understanding the nature of human sexual response.

From the website: 'Their research program, considered a shocking innovation, included the physiological study of women as they reached for and attained orgasm. The laboratory contained a bed, monitoring equipment like electrocardiograph machines, cameras, and an artificial coition machine. The machine featured a transparent, hollow, penis-shaped probe run by a motor, fitted with a movie camera. The camera recorded changes in the vagina and was useful in studying the effects of contraceptives.'

Arousal in Women, Viagra & Erotica: 'All in the Mind'

Scientists have concluded that women achieve most sexual satisfaction through the stimulation of their brain and not any other organ. After eight years of tests involving 3,000 women, Pfizer, the company behind Viagra, the little blue pill that has transformed men's sex lives, has abandoned efforts to prove that the drug works for females too.
Studies found that even though Viagra induced a greater pelvic blood flow in women. they did not feel substantially more aroused.

I Feel Myself: Erotic Orgasm Videos

Face of Woman about to OrgasmFrom the website: 'Why create a site with ordinary people sharing their orgasms in varying stages of undress? For one - watching someone orgasm is an intensely erotic experience. ... But we do have some altruistic intent. Orgasm is no mean feat, for some it is not experienced to it's fullest, and for others, not at all. The importance of unrepressive positive sexual attitudes can not be underestimated in creating a happy, healthy, orgasmic society.'

The Science behind Pornography & Addiction

From the essay: 'The notions of 'sexual addiction' generally, including 'pornography addiction' as well as the recent concern with 'online cyber sex addiction' are highly questionable to most scientists.
So-called sex addiction may be nothing more than learned behavior that can be unlearned; labels such as 'sex addict' may tell us more about society’s prejudices than the client; scientists who have undertaken studies of exposure to sex materials report that despite high levels of exposure to pornography, few negative effects are observed.'

Online Pornography, CyberSex and Addictive Behaviour

'Researchers writing in The Journal of Sex Addiction and Compulsivity report that many of the men and women who now spend dozens of hours each week seeking stimulation from their computers deny that they have a problem and refuse to seek help until their marriages, their jobs, or both, are in jeopardy.'

To those who say a behavioral compulsion is not a true addiction, Dr. Jennifer Schneider responded with a definition of addiction that would clearly apply to cyber sex abusers: ‘Loss of control, continuation of the behavior despite adverse consequences and preoccupation or obsession with obtaining the drug or pursuing the behavior.’

Analyse any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which life owes its perpetuation.Analyse any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which life owes its perpetuation. ... The primitive stages can always be re-established; the primitive mind is, in the fullest meaning of the word, imperishable. ... Mans most disagreeable habits and idiosyncrasies, his deceit, his cowardice, his lack of reverence, are engendered by his incomplete adjustment to a complicated civilisation. It is the result of the conflict between our instincts and our culture. (Sigmund Freud)
