Compared with other search terms, 'sex slang' in itself gets relatively
few searches (though many people use slang / abbreviations when searching
sex on the internet). An interesting aspect of my work collecting search
data has been learning new slang terms and their popularity. eg. milf -
mothers i'd like to fuck.
It is also interesting that the most insulting slang we use tends to be
sexually related (e.g. 'You fucking cunt'). We assume this relates to the
strong emotive power that these words have, which in turn is related to
our strong primitive sexual instincts that these words refer to.

Gender and Sexism: Knowledge and Use of Slang
Slang is a nonstandard vocabulary belonging to a particular culture or
subculture. It consists of raw and unrefined expressions, many of which
are considered taboo, vulgar, and derogatory. In fact, slang terms are more
commonly used than standard words when referring to sexual attraction, acts,
and relationships (Flexher, 1975).
American English is particularly rich in slang. Despite the large number
of slang expressions that the average American knows, and the frequency
with which slang expressions are used, the knowledge and use of slang has
received little empirical attention. The neglect of slang as a topic for
research may be the result of several factors, such as the belief that slang
use changes rapidly or that slang is not 'standard' language. However, research
concerning the knowledge and use of slang is important. For example, the
study of slang terms describing men and women, the topic of the present
study, can offer insights into how the sexes are viewed and, perhaps, treated
within a particular culture.
The notion that slang has traditionally been a male domain perhaps explains the conclusion shared by numerous scholars and researchers that there are more sexual and derogatory expressions describing women than men. One analysis of the English language found 220 expressions for a sexually promiscuous woman compared to merely 22 idioms to describe the male counterpart (Stanley, 1977). Miller and Swift (1976) agreed that English contains more insulting and sexual words aimed at women than men.' (from their website)

From the essay: 'The earliest recorded linguistic taboos are Middle English blasphemies such as 'slids' ('God's eyelids') and 'sfoot' ('God's foot'). It is interesting that these early curses were related to parts of God's body - the eyelids and feet - as contemporary swearing has become secularised though bodily taboos have remained: from eyelids and feet we have moved to erogenous zones such as 'cunt', 'cock', 'tits', and 'ass'.
Whilst the church exercised considerable power over society in the Middle
Ages, its authority diminished following the Reformation of the sixteenth
century. With this revolutionary iconoclasm came a reduction in the potency
of religious profanity, thus, for example, the insulting term 'devil' was
significantly weakened.
The transition from religious to secular swearing changed the boundaries
of linguistic taboo. Religious curses ('damn') were replaced by taboos relating
to bodily functions such as sexual intercourse ('fuck') and excretion ('shit').
In the twentieth century, these in turn were joined by new taboos relating
to 'politically incorrect' language, including homophobic ('queer'), sexist
('bitch'), and racist ('nigger') abuse.
... The direct influence of religion on the lives of the population has steadily decreased, though its indirect influence remains substantial. ... Sex is now, according to JC Flugel, 'the most taboo-ridden of all subjects in the modern world' (Eli M Oboler, 1974). One method of social regulation is through language, thus the lexicon of sex is tabooed in order to repress sex itself: 'Prudery's first line of defence is the regulation of speech. The Social Acceptability of Sexual Slang: Functions of Biological Sex and Psychological Gender
From the essay: 'A study explored the social acceptability that accompanies
the expression of sexual slang. The study of gender differences in language
use is nothing new. Previous research has indicated that men and women differ
in their use of tentative language, topic selection, control techniques,
and conversational style. However, this research has examined differences
due to male and female biological sex, and has not examined differences
due to psychological gender. The subjects were, 49 male and 92 female undergraduate
students.
Results indicated that, for the most part, neither biological sex nor psychological
gender accounted for differences in the social acceptability of sexual slang.
Findings suggest that men and women are moving toward a universal use of
sexual slang.

Language, Gender and Identity: A Social, Cultural and Psychological Study
From the essay: 'The resistance of women to being treated as a minority group is believed to have led to the discovery of distinct male and female subcultures which in turn resulted in differences in women’s and men’s speech (i.e. gender-differentiated linguistic styles).
This study looked at the relationship between sex and language by examining
the writings of one hundred and forty-four female and male undergraduate
students in the English Department of the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
It aimed at discovering how their sense of female or male identity is linguistically
expressed. All 144 students were questioned regarding their choice of words/language
and their attitudes towards language in terms of its relevance in defining
their personal and socio cultural identity, using open-ended questionnaires.
Their speech and writing were analysed in relation to the use of obscenities
or swearing, slang and alternative names for women/men (or lady/young man).
The study adopted two main approaches to gender differences (the dominance
approach and the difference approach) in explaining the differences in the
linguistic styles of male and female undergraduates.

A Study of Gender Directed Insults
From the website: 'College students, 107 females and 57 males, were asked to give single-word or phrase responses to four questions about the 'worst thing' a member of each sex can call a member of the same or the opposite sex. The resulting 134 different words and phrases were sorted into seven categories by peer raters and a series of chi-square analyses were performed. With minor exceptions, no sex differences in responses were found, but highly significant differences were found in insults attributed to and by the two sexes. For example, insults referring to sexual looseness were said to be directed almost exclusively toward women, and those referring to homosexuality almost exclusively toward men, but only by other men. Results suggest that male and female college students agree on some stereotypic differences between men and women in the giving and receiving of verbal attack.'

From the essay: 'We adopt a two-pronged approach to individual differences
in sexuality by combining the strengths of the lexical approach with the
theoretical lens of evolutionary personality psychology (Buss, 1991). Individual
differences in sexuality take on supreme importance in evolutionary perspective
because of their close links with reproduction and their consequences for
solutions to specific adaptive problems of mating.
Although we view the lexical approach as limited in certain respects as
a sole approach to personality, it has the strength of identifying important
domains of individual differences that might be overlooked by a purely top-down
theoretical approach. Furthermore, since sexuality appears to be an especially
important topic in everyday social life - judging from the content of gossip;
the consumption of tabloids; and the themes in soap operas, songs, novels,
operas, and plays - we would expect that the natural language would be a
rich source of terms to describe individual differences in sexuality.
Indeed, this seems to be the case. Based on examinations of various general
sexuality references we uncovered many sexuality terms within the English
lexicon. The English language seems to possess numerous individual adjectives
that describe variations in sexuality, including many synonym clusters that
reflect important evolutionary aspects of human mating psychology.'
