What is Sexual Perversion?

From the website: 'Intellectuals, philosophers, religious leaders and lawmakers have long debated the exact definition or parameters to evaluate sexual practices for 'perversions.' Even within these groups, much debate has occurred on how to define it. Many conservative religious groups (i.e., Catholic church and Evangelism) see sexual perversion as a cause and as a symptom of the decay of society's moral standards.

Often, conservative groups regard any sexual activity outside procreation as immoral and therefore a perversion.

... Sexual perversion is an extremely difficult concept to define. It is often defined by an individual's own perceptions, experiences and morals of what should and should not be considered a perversion.
Two possible definitions are: deviation from the normal (however, what is the definition of normal?); and a descent from the ideal (what ideal and who determines it?). These seem to be dictionary type definition and far too open to subjective interpretation. The question remains, who determines what the parameters or limitations of normal, ideal or complete should be.

... Some excellent guidelines are the universal basic rights of a human being. These rights are guaranteed to all persons by the United Nations. Some of these rights include the right to expect others not to harm him or her, to seek uncoerced consent, to respect the dignity of the person and not to humiliate her or him. These rights are not all encompassing but provide some direction on the issue of perversion.'

Female Infanticide in India

Every year, thousands of baby girls in India are murdered by their own parents.

Sociologists blame such killings on a widely held Indian belief that girls are an economic drain because families still have to pay expensive dowries at the time of their marriage.

Authorities have said that over the past few years, more than 4,500 female babies in India's southern Salem district alone have been killed - by their own parents.

Modern technology has only worsened the phenomena. While infanticide has long been practiced, female foeticide is a relatively new phenomenon. Over the past decade, inexpensive access to ultrasound technology has led to many families determining the sex of an unborn child and then aborting it if it is found to be female.

Africans on the Internet: Sex, Society & Taboos

From the website: 'The tool, Google Trends reveals how Africans use the Internet. 'Sex' is one of the most searched words in the Internet, but it may come as an embarrassment to many Muslim countries that their citizens are the world's most frequent digital sex searchers; in particular North Africans. Homosexuality, also creates much interest.'

Internet Search Study: Sex Is Out, Consuming Is In

Internet users are doing far fewer searches for sex and pornography and more for e-commerce and business than they were seven years ago, University of Pittsburgh and Penn State researchers say in a new book.

"Twenty percent of all searching was sex-related back in 1997; now it's about 5 percent," said Amanda Spink, the University of Pittsburgh professor who co-authored Web Search: Public Searching of the Web with Penn State professor Bernard J. Jansen.

"It's a little bit more in Europe, 8 to 10 percent, but in comparison to everything else, it's a very small percent," Spink said. "People are using (the web) more as an everyday tool rather than as just an entertainment medium."

Spink said her studies show queries for e-business or commerce increased by 86 percent in the past seven years.

Comments: What the researchers have failed to recognise is that over time people have found quality websites on human sexuality or pornography (or sites that they like). By visiting their bookmarks rather than searching for new sites (which can be very time consuming), search results for sex terms would reduce over time whilst the amount of sex viewed online stayed at a similar level. Evolution of the Internet: A Study of Web Search Trends. Sex to E Commerce

This article provides an overview of recent research conducted from 1997 to 2003 that explored how people search the Web.

The researchers examined the topics of Web searches; how users search the Web using terms in queries during search sessions; and the diverse types of searches, including medical, sex, e-commerce, multimedia, information. Key findings include changes in search topics since 1997, including a shift from entertainment to e-commerce queries. Further findings show little change in many aspects of Web searching from 1997-2003, including query and search session length.

Analyse any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which life owes its perpetuation.Analyse any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which life owes its perpetuation. ... The primitive stages can always be re-established; the primitive mind is, in the fullest meaning of the word, imperishable. ... Mans most disagreeable habits and idiosyncrasies, his deceit, his cowardice, his lack of reverence, are engendered by his incomplete adjustment to a complicated civilisation. It is the result of the conflict between our instincts and our culture. (Sigmund Freud)
